Irish Youth Olympic Squad at Deer Park Hotel

The Irish Youth Olympic squad for Trabzon Youth Olympics were at Deer Park Hotel yesterday making final arrangements for the big event.
The Olympic Council of Ireland has selected a strong squad to represent Ireland in five sports at this month's 11th European Youth Olympic Games being held in Trabzon, Turkey. Over 2,000 of the best young athletes in Europe will compete in this key multi-sport event on the Black Sea – an important competition in the development of young athletes for future Olympic participation from the 24th -29th July, 2011. The Irish Team will have a 5 day pre Games training camp in Turkey prior to the opening ceremony.

Junior Golf & Activity Camps

Last week saw the start of the Junior Camps at Deer Park. This year it was decided to change the format and offer golf coaching in the morning and a range of outdoor activities in the afternoon. This was a great success and the children left tired out but happy!! There are still places available - next one starts on July 18th and the last one starts on August 15th. The price for the weekly camp is €170.00 for both morning and afternoon sessions - Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm. Golf only in the mornings is €100 and Fitness and Sporting activities in the afternoons only costs €80.00

Rhododendron Gardens, Howth Castle

Now is the time to come and visit the spectacular Rhododendron Gardens located at the back of the Deer Park Hotel. The origin of these gardens date back to around 1850 when the idea of a Rhododendron Garden was born. To achieve this, earth and peat were carried up the cliff face and put into holes in the rocky surface. The original plants were mainly the common purple rhododendron "Ponticum". The Howth collection is certainly the best general one in Ireland. The total number of named plants would be around 1,500 including species, crosses and hybrids plus a large number of un-named plants that now have flourished on the rocky slopes.

There are a number of really nice walks - along the lower path and undercliff walk for those who prefer not to climb the steep slopes and for those who are able for a considerable climb there are the routes up the Mountain walk and upper cliff.

Great activities and events in Howth over the next two weeks!!

The Etchells World Championships are taking place bringing world class sailors to our shores - take a walk along the top of the East Pier and you will have a first class view of the sailing!!

On Sunday 22nd August, there will be a Howth Sea Search and Rescue demonstration taking place between the East Pier and Ireland's Eye from 3pm.

Whale Watching off Howth!!!

Visitors to Howth have for years now enjoyed feeding the seals down at the west pier where there is a very popular seal family!! Well now our visitors have the opportunity to do a bit of whale watching!! Last week a humpback whale was spotted off Ireland's Eye - it was a big surpirse for the young boy who was partaking in a sailing course when he capsized and the whale swam between the rescue boat and him!!! He'll never be short of a good story to tell!!!

The Tour of Gentlemen 2010

We have a lot of people who stay with us at Deer Park who as well as being our guests have over the years become friends. Last weekend we were delighted to welcome back a group of these special friends who have been staying with us for many many years - THE TOUR OF GENTLEMEN.

These lads mostly from Wales are a real pleasure to have stay and live up to their name as they are truly gentlemen - all the staff and guests had a great weekend - late night singing in the bar and true to the Welsh tradition there were some really fine voices!! They even had our Donal and some of the staff singing a few bars!! Having a late night did not stop them being up first thing each morning for their golf!!
